Instead of having player-selected flags, why not have certain autoruns have certain skill or stat minimums? A decking run might, for instance, require that you have a 6 in Computers, while a combat run might require that you have some sort of combat skill and at least 2 in every physical attribute. A check could also be added that would only give the run to a player with a datajack. For players who don't want to have their runs filtered, there could be a command such as 'toggle runfilter' that would give them the current non-character-specific run set. |
I am no coder but I know enough to know that it would be difficult to code this in such a way to ensure that the right type of player gets offered the right type of run. Most characters will have at least a 4+ in a weapon skill, but that does not mean they have the other skills/gear to tackle a real "street sam" kind of combat situation. Same could be said for datajacks or computers skills, that does not necessarily mean they deck. I see the player controlled flags (or mostly controlled, say if you did not roll an awakened character then a flag about 'magical combat, aura assessing and dealing with spirits' would not be available.)
My main goal in proposing this, just to repeat my self, is letting new autoruns be implemented whose objectives require specialized skills that could be broken down into a few categories. Like awakened or decking.
I was thinking about this earlier today and it occurred to me that you would not need to overhaul the current system, everyone still gets the runs currently available, but sprinkled in the current mix could be some of the special skills required types. I think it would be cool if these runs were longer and might require a couple trips back to the J before they are completed (multiple stages, say gather info, now go act on the info, now go cover your tracks), the rewards for them might be higher then normal as well and could also have equipment as part of the payment, like a disposable focus or perhaps the newest tactical backpack hot off the Ares R&D teams testing shelf. These special runs might be offered every 15 TKE or so.
I'll do my best to type out an example, as I see it, on the fly.
You say, 'work?'
Ricky Ticky Johnson says, 'Yes I do have something, its been on hold until someone with your skill set and good track record became available, are you interested?'
You say, 'Yes'
Ricky Ticky Johnson says, 'Good. We have limited information to act on, but my employer wants to be able to act if the situation turns out to have specific qualities. Firstly there is a new group of hermetics in town and it is believed that they are sustaining spells for a rival faction. The first leg of this job will require you to astrally assess a member of this group who we believe uses a private booth at Sizzlers to meet up with his clients. Be there between 4-7PM assess the mage who turns up, then report back.'
(Player goes and does as asked)
You say, 'done'
Ricky Ticky Johnson says 'OK now that you have that mages signature shortly after you left a member of the rival faction was seen entering and meeting with the mage, I need you too check out the client and see if any spells on him match the signature of that mage. Return to me when you have conformation.'
(player does as asked, might have a complication like getting ambushed or perhaps it wasn't a spell but an elemental on overwatch)
You say, 'done'
Ricky Ticky Johnson says, 'It seems our attention did not go unnoticed, but with conformation that this group is indeed doing magical work for my employers competitors my order for you is taking out this new resource of theirs. Just to lower the footprint we only need three of the mages taken out, these are the more experienced in the group and it is believed that if they are taken out of the equation then this group will fall apart. I have a list of the hang out spots for these three individuals and put them on this for you. They might of caught wind that we are on to them, so they might be prepared for you, do not expect an easy fight, they will be on guard'
Ricky Ticky Johnson hands you a neatly folded piece of paper.
(couple fights and manabolts later player returns)
You say, 'done'
Ricky Ticky Johnson says, 'My employer was impressed and gave me an item in addition to your normal fee for time spent, again good work.'
Ricky Ticky Johnson gives you a miniature pewter statue of the Thinking Man. (rating 4 disposable focus)
you receive 4.5 karma.
You recieve 8,500 nuyen.
So I think this example shows everything in my thought, a run with some depth, multiple stages and most importantly a reminder that your character has skills that differ from other runners. That difference makes you needed for some situations that come up in the shadows other then,
Ricky Ticky Johnson says, 'I lost my wallet while I was fishing on the docks, go get it and return'

Simple suggestion - maybe banks could have a shopkeeper mob seling varying grades of credsticks, to make the versions higher than plastic easier to obtain as they would be in the setting. You can always add an availability check for versions higher than plastic but just as varying clip sizes should be obtainable by most firearms retailers most credstick grades should be obtainable by banks, providing you can convince them to let you have that particular grade.
Another suggestion relating to Hermetics, currently it's difficult to get libraries other than rating 6 spell and rating 6 fire conjuring. Perhaps we could have the ability use the create command and then build our own libraries with a choice of type and rating? Either taking the cost from cash on hand like with shamanic lodges, or using conjuring materials as a resource which would also add an availability check and wait time.
Regarding area effect spells above how about this - maximum number of affected targets equal to half spell rating rounded up? I thought SR rules stated rating affects the size of the affected area so this would be a (very) abstract way of representing that, you could always put a maximum limit of X targets if you wish so that high TKE chars can't go round manaballing the mud with rating 12 spells or something silly. Or you could always use a third of the spell rating instead of half, possibly plus one, so rating 6 spells would only hit 3 targets. Grenades could always be given a similar maximum number of targets to reflect their blast radius, with the added stipulation that bad grenade rolls make the grenade blow up in your hand and only affect the character making the throwing test.

Robinson posted about a lease expiration warning elsewhere. I concur that a warning 2 days prior to expiration is wise. I am aware of the status command but even with that there are apartment losses that negatively impact characters. At minimum a mudmail automatically sent by your landlord would 48 hours prior to your lease expiring would be a good solution. also I would like a single line message the first time you log on after that 48 hour point occurs, much like the old you have mudmail message.
also bring back that old you have mudmail message for when initially logging on after a mail was sent.

Making a character is fundamentally not user-friendly, particularly to someone who has never played shadowrun before. This is exasperated by the fact help files are not available until after you enter the game.
The way I suggest fixing this to be done is by giving all people entering a [wageslave] species with an array of randomly rolled points and so on. After they have the opportunity to read, learn, and play around a little make them go through character creation.
