Staff Documentation Project
(An AwakeMUD Developer Community Based Project.)
Objective: To flesh out a full set of helpfiles to assist Staff in thier creation efforts of AwakeMUD
Method: Each tutorial and/or helpfile written should be posted as a reply to this thread, and I will edit it into the first and following posts. Upon completion, I will edit them all into the proper filetypes and submit them to Che for addition to the distro.
Tutorials (To be added to the Staff Handbook) ("handbook" command)
- Building rooms
- Building areas
- Building objects (with explanations of each item type's fields)
- Adding ICs
- Adding vehicles
- Adding homes
- Adding cyber/bioware
Additional Helpfiles (For wizhelp)
Helpfiles will follow the standard set by the following example (fields denoted by parenthesis):
----
(Command Name or Topic) ADVANCE
(Usage) Usage: ADVANCE <character> <level>
(Description of Command or Topic) This advances the specified character to the specified level. And since only Owners have access to this command, this help file is rather useless.

Credit: Che
--------------------------
ECHO
Usage: ECHO <message>
This allows you to echo a message through to the room you are currently in.
The syntax is "echo" and then the message you wish to echo. For example:
echo Lets kill Sean!
- Everyone in the room would see:
Lets kill Sean!
See Also: GAECHO, GECHO, ZECHO, AECHO, ZAECHO
-------------------------
AECHO
Usage: AECHO <message>
This allows you to echo a message through to the room you are currently in. However, this differs from echo as you can only see it on the astral plane. The syntax is "aecho" and then the message you wish to echo. For example:
aecho You sense an intense aura of violence in the immediate area...
- Everyone in the room who could see the astral plane would see:
You sense an intense aura of violence in the immediate area...
See Also: GAECHO, GECHO, ZECHO, ECHO, ZAECHO
---------------
ZECHO
Usage: ZECHO <message>
This allows you to echo a message through to the zone you are currently in. The syntax is "zecho" and then the message you wish to echo. For example:
zecho Zone resetting!
- Everyone in the current zone would see:
Zone resetting!
See Also: GAECHO, GECHO, AECHO, ECHO, ZAECHO
---------------
GECHO
Usage: GECHO <message>
This allows you to echo a message to everyone in the entire game. The syntax is "gecho" and then the message you wish to echo. For example:
gecho Stand by for copyover!
- Everyone in the game would see:
Stand by for copyover!
See Also: GAECHO, AECHO, ZECHO, ECHO, ZAECHO
---------------
GAECHO
Usage: GAECHO <message>
This allows you to echo a message to everyone in the entire game who can see the astral plane. The syntax is "gaecho" and then the message you wish to echo. For example:
gaecho Your mind begins to wander...
- Everyone in the game who could see the astral plane would see:
Your mind begins to wander...
See Also: GECHO, AECHO, ZECHO, ECHO, ZAECHO
---------------
ZAECHO
Usage: ZAECHO <message>
This allows you to echo a message to the zone you are currently in, to anyone who can see the astral plane. The syntax is "zaecho" and then the message you wish to echo. For example:
zaecho A sudden feeling of dread besets you!
- Everyone in the current zone who could see the astral plane would see:
A sudden feeling of dread besets you!
See Also: GAECHO, GECHO, AECHO, ECHO, ZAECHO
------------------------------------
AWARD
Usage: AWARD <Player> <Amount> <Award>
This allows you to award a player for excellence in RPing, helping newbies, helping staff (writing descriptions, finding bugs, typos, etc.) and for reporting exploits and other such activities. Karma amount is with the decimal - type 500 in and it will give 5.00 Karma. Type in 5025 and it will give 50.25 Karma. Use this command minimally and more for testing purposes than for actual use, unless VERY highly deserved.
Example:
>AWARD Kru 500 being cool
You awarded 5.00 karma to Kru for being cool.
See Also: No Related Topics.
---------------------------------
FORCE

See Also: POSSESS, RETURN
---------------------------------
POSSESS
Usage: POSSESS <Victim>
This allows you to possess a NPC or player (who is LD.) Any command typed is just like you typed it into their command prompt, and any look or stat commands will be showed with the POSSESSed entities abilities. This command will not work on staff a higher level than you.
Example:
> possess troll
Okay.
[WIZLOG: [35528] (Kru) Kru assumes the role of Yautja, Lord of the Hunt.]
See Also: FORCE, RETURN
---------------------------------
RETURN
Usage: RETURN
This returns you to your original body from your possessed entity. This command will not work on staff a higher level than you.
Example:
> return
You return to your original body.
[WIZLOG: [35528] Kru discontinues the role of Yautja, Lord of the Hunt.]
See Also: POSSESS, FORCE
---------------------------------
HANDBOOK
Usage: HANDBOOK
This brings up the Staff Handbook. The handbook should contain building policies and guidelines, building tutorials, description examples, staff code of conduct, staff punishments, and player punishment and award policies.

I'd love to see an entry for zedit. Does it only edit zone command lists or is there a way to create new zones and assign vnums for building? Cheers.

Nice work Akimbo. HUGE task ahead of you.
I've only worked with some of the zedit commands. Here is a quick rundown. I'll cover some ground that might already be known in case it is not.
"zswitch zone number". Such as "zswitch 100" Sets you to work in zone 100. Zone 100 would be all vnums from 10000 to 10099.
vnums are used for a lot of things, Rooms, Items, Mobs, Quests, ICE, Hosts, Vehicles, Shops. Each type of thing in zone 100 has its own vnum set from 10000 to 10099. Meaning in zone 100 you can have 100 Rooms, 100 Items, 100 Mobs, 100 Quests, 100 ICE, 100 Hosts, 100 Vehicles, 100 Shops. Hence 800 things.
To see each set of things we use rlist, ilist, mlist, qlist, iclist, hlist, vlist, slist followed by the vnum range. "qlist 10000 10099" would show all the quests in zone 100 and so on.
Now "zlist" will show all the commands you have given to all the types of things in the zone you are presently "zswitch" to.
"zedit add" will bring up the menu to make a new command.
"zedit {command #}" Such as "zedit 30" will let you edit or remove that command from the zlist.
Here are the "zedit add" menus.

Thanks for the info Yoda. I am still wondering if Che (or anyone else who might know can tell me the easiest way to create/delete zones. Is there any way to do it through olc or must I edit the files in the zones dir manually? Also, is the information that I see displayed from logwatch connlog saved to a file anywhere? Finally, is there a way to load a player (juse like a mob) when they are offline? I realize I could figure all this out on my own eventually by studying the code, which I am doing and will continue to do. However, it helps to ask some questions in the meantime. I will continue to share my problems/experience as I explore the codebase. Cheers.

Thanks. I figured it was something simple. How about zdelete, is that the command that you recommend not be used?

Cool. That's what I've been doing. Thanks for the reply. Do you know how one can load players while they are offline in order to set, stat, or advance them etc? Cheers.

How do you use any of the commands? Trying to use redit or qedit or anything like that, a message comes up, Privileged Operation.

I have a decient set of homebrew help-files for OLC. I can either upload them as files, or just do a text dump when I return to the states if you would like (Feb 10-11)

Well, apparently i'm too incompitent to transfer files from a linux box to a windows box (/cry), but, anyhow, here are the cut/paste of the helpfiles that I made... Spelling, grammar, inteligence and factual errors abound, here you go! Sure, its not just a builders help guide, nor does it cover all of the wiz commands. Hell, you might not even find it usefull. Cheers!
----
HELP!!!!
Anyways, most of the help files for the Wiz commands are done. I deleted
the rest of them, but left the ansi [help ansi, help color] in, becuase it
is a good refrence, and i sure as shit didn't feel like writing in my
own...
Here is a list of them all....
A: addpoint advance ansi at award
B: ban banname building
C: copyover
D: dc dig
F: force freeze
G: goto
I: icedit iclist iclone idelete iedit ilist iload imotd incognito invis
L: last logwatch
M: mclone mdelete medit mlist mute muteooc
N: notitle
O: olc olcdisable
P: page pardon penalize phonelist poofin poofout possess purge
Q: qedit qlist
R: rclone rdelete reboot redit restore rlist rpe
S: sedit send set settime show skillset slist slowns snoop snowball stat
stores
T: tail teleport
W: wizhelp
X: xyz
Z: zdelete zlist zreset zedit zswitch zyx
---
ADDPOINT
This is for giving a power point to an adept. usefull if you have a mort
you are using as a test char. Otherwise, useless.
---
ADVANCE
I don't think anyone but Zink has the power to use this command, but even
if you do, DON'T. Thank you.
---
AT
This command (i think) allows you to do an action in a room (generally
socials) that you are not in.
Syntax at [room vnum, or mob name] [action]
---
AWARD
This is to give karma bonuses to a char. type it by its self, it gives you
the syntax
---
BAN
Don't do this.
---
BANNAME
Don't do this.
---
BUILDING
First, you must get a zone. Please request one from Zink before creating
your own.
Once you have your zone, type:
zswitch [zone]
zedit
in the options menu, change the name to somthing approiate, connected = 1,
quit and save. Leave the 'Top of zone' alone. If you think you will exceed
100 rooms, please let Zink know ahead of time, so that he can compensate.
This will give you rooms, items, shops, vehicles, quests, and mobs, with
the numbers [zone]00 through [zone]99.
Please make sure to set room descriptions, mob descriptions, etc.
otherwise it will not write to file, and that means it will all go bye-bye
on the next copyover.
---
COPYOVER
If you don't know what this command does, you probably shouldn't be here,
but just in case...
This command launches a new copy of the mud, and shuts down the old one.
Please ooc to make sure everyone who is on the mud is ready for it.
Thanks.
---
DC
This is used to disconnect somone from the mud. Quite akin to a /kick on
irc.
---
DIG
This is a very usefull command for building. It creates an exit to a room,
and a coresponding exit back into the room that you are in.
EX: you are in room 200, and you type 'dig n 201' It places an exit in
room 200 n into room 201, and an exit in rom 201 s into 200. It is
probably the easiest way to link rooms.
---
FORCE
This forces the target [either mob or player] to do an action.
---
FREEZE
This stops a mort from doing much of anything. No real use on an OLC port.
To undo it, use the command THAW
---
GOTO
This command allows you to goto either a mob, or a room (selected by
vnum).
---
ICEDIT
This is for creating and editing IC [intrusion countermeasures] or mobs in
the matrix. I have not messed with this yet, so i can give you little
help.
---
ICLIST
Like the other xlist commands, it lists up to 500 sequential items, in
this case, IC.
---
ICLONE
This command clones an item.
Syntax: iclone [item to be cloned] [place to clone it to]
This is espically helpful for making multiple similar items, with only
minor instances. In wichcase there are quite a few of these that you are
cloning, i would suggest writing an alias to help you speed up the
process. If you have any problems with making aliases to work on items,
rooms, mobs, etc, ask Zink, hes a alias junkie.
---
IDELETE
DO NOT USE ANY OF THE xDELETE COMMANDS. They can very well mess up
your zones, and frankly, Zink won't feel like editing the files by hand.
Thanks.
---
IEDIT
This command is used to create, and edit items. Mostly menu drivin. If you
have any questions about any of the settings or flags, either consult
Zink, another builder, or circlemud.org.
---
ILIST
This command lists up to 500 items sequentialy, with their vnum, and the
number existing in the game.
Syntax: ilist [first vnum] [last vnum]
---
ILOAD
This command allows you to 'create an item out of thin air'. This is
mainly used for calling forth items, so that you can check out their
descriptions/attributes/functionality.
Syntax: iload [vnum]
---
IMOTD
Message of the day for immortals. Since this is an OLC port, its quite
useless, and may never be changed. Yes, i suck.
---
INCOGNITO
This command is so that anyone with a lower level of advancement (that
is, mortals with the level of 1), see you as 'someone' through ooc,
newbie, etc. Fairly useless this being an OLC port.
---
INVIS
This sets your level of invisibility. Yeah, you should have known this.
---
LAST
Almost completly identical to the finger command, except that it shows
their IP address also.
---
LOGWATCH
This lets you watch the logs. Why would you? hell if i know. Seems to just
give me spam.
---
MCLONE
This is used to clone a mob, in the same way that iclone works. Please see
the help file ICLONE. Thanks.
---
MDELETE
DO NOT USE THIS COMMAND, IT CAN FUCK UP YOUR ZONES!
See also: idelete
---
MLIST
This command lists up to 500 mobs sequentially.
Syntax: medit [first vnum] [last vnum]
---
MUTE
Dosnt seem to be functional...
---
MUTEOOC
You tell me...
---
NOTITLE
Makes it so a person can not have a title.
---
OLC
Use this command if it is telling you 'OLC is currently not avalible'. A
simple toggle to be able to build. If it is giving you a 'privlidged
operation' error, try 'set [name] olc on', or have Zink do it if you
can't.
---
PAGE
Another command that can be used instead of 'tell'. It dosn't appear to be
global, although it does have a local echo.
---
PARDON
Use this to get rid of the (Killer) flag...
---
PENALIZE
This command is to rob somone of karma. well, to remove it from them.
Almost useless on a olc port.
---
PHONELIST
Most likley lists all the phone numbers, and their whereabouts, but since
i have no phones on the mud at this time, i can't be for sure.
---
POOFIN
This message, followed by any string of charcters after it, will give that
text to any person/mob in a room that you 'teleport' or 'goto' into.
---
POOFOUT
This message, followed by any string of charcters after it, will give that
text to any person/mob in a room that you 'teleport' or 'goto' out of.
---
POSSESS
This is used to take controll of a mob, or a linkless person. You become
them, including you're ooc's take their names. Kinda cool.
---
PURGE
Gets rid of things on the ground, like a copyover does.
---
QEDIT
This is used to create and edit quests (runs). I have had no luck getting
any of them to work, so i can offer minimal help at this time.
---
QLIST
Lists up to 500 quests (runs) sequentially.
Syntax: qlist [first vnum] [last vnum]
---
RCLONE
This is used to clone rooms, good for having a bunch of similar rooms, or
similar flags on them.
---
RDELETE
DO NOT USE THIS COMMAND, IT CAN SCREW UP YOUR ZONE! Just don't do it,
or any other xDelete command. thx.
---
REBOOT
Just don't do it kiddies... Thats all i have to say about that.
---
REDIT
This is used to edit/create rooms. if it is not followed by a vnum, it
edits the room you are in.
---
RESTORE
This command is used to heal the target back up to 10/10, or max/max, if
its not 10/10.
---
RLIST
This command is used to list up to 500 rooms sequentially, by vnum.
Syntax: rlist [first vnum] [last vnum]
---
RPE
I think it stands for role-playing enforcer. Somthing opposite of a
powergamer i think. I'm not sure exactly. it gives them the (RPE) flag
on the who list. ???
---
SEDIT
This command is for making and editing shops.
---
SEND
I think its meant to give somone somthing when not near them, but i havn't
gotten it to work. You're an Im, just goto them, and give it to em.
---
SET
This is used to set all kinds of things for people, such as geneder,
stats, nuyen, and other things. Play around with it.
---
SETTIME
This is used to set the time in the mud. type the command by it self for
syntax.
---
SHOW
Type it by itself to see what it can show. I use 'show zones' quite
frequently.
---
SKILLSET
skillset [player] '[skill]' [level]
Used to set skills.
---
SLIST
This lists up to 500 shops sequiently based on their vnum.
Syntax: slist [first vnum] [last vnum]
---
SLOWNS
This changes weather or not sitenames and ip addresses will be resolved or
not. What does that mean for me and you? I ain't got a fuckin clue.
---
SNOOP
This is good for seeing what someone else sees. I frequently use it on
other builders so that i can see if they are communicating with me while i
am building, since the menus block out ooc, newbie, and the like.
The start of a snoop is shown by a %, and a %% as a EOF marker.
---
SNOWBALL
As far as i can tell, this is just a socail command that somehow got
tossed in the WIZ list...
---
STAT
This can be used to get the stats of any mob, or item (in inv, or in
room). Good if you want to get the stats on somthing w/o possessing it, or
finding the vnum of an item.
---
STORES
How to build them...
This is a simple tutorial on how to build a working store.
First, you need to be in a zone. zswitch to yours now.
Next, you must create a room for the store to be in: redit [vnum]
Then, create the mob. medit [vnum]
I strongly suggest setting the flag SENTINEL, as to keep it from wandering
about. Also, set it as !KILL
create an item for it to sell. iedit [vnum]
you MUST set a value for this item, or the shop will not work, period.
Nothin in this mud is for free.
I would suggest setting the mob to spawn next, Zedit add [vnum]
Type = mob
conditonal = always
load mob = [vnum of mob]
max number in game = 0 works, if you have #>1 it may spawn more of them on
zresets.
load in room = [vnum of room]
now its time to actually do the shop work.
sedit [vnum]
there are quite a few options here, the only thing you really need to get
the shop to work correctly is setting it to the mob, and putting the items
in the sell list. DO NOT zreset BEFORE A COPYOVER. it will loose the
store settings.
once a copyover has been completed, it should work. If you have any
problems, contact Zink. Also, before doing a copyover (if you have that
ability) please make sure that any other builders are prepaired for it,
and Zink espically. If they do not respond ooc, send them a tell, to see
if they are in a menu. if they are, DO NOT COPYOVER
Troubleshooting:
Sometimes you have to sedit the opening and closing times to get shops to
work. For some reason, sometimes you must make a second shop, try it in
the last number of your zone (znum)(99). I don't know, i just work here.
---
TAIL
This has somthing to do with logs. I don't care to write any more.
---
TELEPORT
This command is used like the goto, but for someone else.
Syntax: teleport [target] [location, either mob or r-vnum]
---
WIZHELP
This is a list of all current working helpfiles for all Wiz commands...
building
---
XYZ
I have no clue what this does.
---
ZDELETE
DO NOT USE THIS COMMAND, IT CAN SCREW UP YOUR ZONE! Thank you, and
have a nice day.
---
ZLIST
Simply lists all z triggers in your currently listed zswitch zone...
SEE ALSO: zedit zreset zswitch
---
ZRESET
Syntax: zreset [zone]
Resets and executes z triggers in the current zone.
Does not purge items on the ground, but it does respawn mobs and items.
SEE ALSO: zedit zlist zswitch
---
ZEDIT
Now, this command is a bitch. it does several things. If you type it by
its self, it allows you to set information about the current zone you are
in. Otherwise, it is used to set up triggers of sorts.
if you want to set up a mob in a room, you will need to zedit add [vnum]
This will allow you to place a specific mob or item in a specified room
upon zreset. This can also be used to give mobs eq, and have them equip it
on the zone reset.
SEE ALSO: zlist zreset zswitch
---
ZYX
I don't know what this command does, but i think it does the opposite of
the command xyz. Just a hunch.
