as soon as you hit play on the dreamdeck, or chipjack, or jukebox or whatever you preferred simsense playback method is...
A Calm clipped voice speaks in your ear, "thank you for using the Daedalus Decks Decking tutorial for the functionally illiterate: Using the Matrix edition. to participate in the interactive version please speak aloud the word 'Interactive' and direct yourself to a private booth of the Seattle Library Main branch located on fourth street between Denny Way and Aurora Avenue. I will wait. Or to continue in lecture mode don't say a damn thing for a few seconds"
The voice pauses for several seconds before continuing, "In this Tutorial we will experience:
connecting to the matrix
basic navigation
Locating hosts
contacting hosts in distant lands
and Basic matrix commands
The voice continues, "For this tutorial you are assumed to have a cyberdeck of either the CMT avatar or Icarus 6 models, the Bod, Sensor, and Masking personas, several utilities including a Browse, read/write, Deception, Sleaze and optionally Analyze. If you do not have these tools you can still learn from this simsense."
The voice continues and shows no signs of shutting up anytime soon, "first have someone install the personas and utilities in your deck, if you have an Icarus 6 this was done by the manufacturer, if you need instruction for persona and utilities installations such as for a CMT Avatar then please experience the Daedalus Decks Tutorials for the Functionally Illiterate: Basic Electronics Edition.
Next you will need to connect your deck to your data-jack or trodes set, in an icarus 6 this is done by plugging a data-jack cable into your data-jack and the same cable into the Green ringed hole in your Icarus. next connect another data-jack cable to the Yellow ringed hole on your Icarus and to any hole in the wall or desk you are sitting at that your cable will fit in snuggly. Now flip the only switch on your Icarus and you will enter the matrix. For additional instruction on attaching a trodes set or the appropriate holes on a CMT Avatar either ask a librarian for assistance or experience Daedalus Decks Tutorials for the Functionally Illiterate: Basic Electronics Edition."
Hopefully you weren't driving while experiencing this because...
Around you is a large meeting area, in the theme of the ancient greek forums.
Tier upon tier of seating leads down to a main dais, from which a speaker could make himself heard throughout the structure. People are milling around in groups in the seating, chatting amongst themselves.
The Calm Clipped voice continues speaking, "now we are in the matrix. locations in the matrix are called HOSTS and this particular host is called the Seattle Public Library Forum. here you can find many people from all over seattle and the world discussing the library and anything they want. At this time we will load our utilities, if you are using the icarus operating system and hot asist imagine touching the icons that look like the following sets images. if you are using a keyboard press in sequence the long series of buttons that best approximates the same series of images"
Load S L E A Z E
Load D E C E P T I O N
Load B R O W S E
Load A N A L Y Z E
Load R E A D
"Now wait briefly for those utilities to load before beginning the Navigation portion of the lesson...
each location in the matrix is called a host, each host is like a part of a tree, some hosts are like leaves with only one connection to a twig, others are like twigs and connect to many leaves but only one branch, others are like branches and connect to many twigs but only one trunk and some are the trunk itself." Given the low production values of this tutorial this explanation is not accompanied by any trideo.
"now that we understand the shape of the matrix we will attempt to navigate through it. In this lesson we will go all the way from a leaf to the trunk, jump to another trunk and navigate back up to a leaf. Once again either imagine pressing the following icons or type the closest thing to them on your keyboard. In the future any commands you are to give will just appear as these red icons."

L T G
You stand between two bookcases stretching in every direction into infinity. A
pool of light surrounds you, brighter and somehow more diffuse then everywhere
else, perfect for reading. You can see other browsers in their small lighted
bubbles above, below and on all sides of you, as small worker drones buzz
around constantly re-stacking shelves.
The calm clipped voice continues "we have now changed host, we used to be in the forum and now we are in the main lobby of the library. we did this by the logon ltg command. this command takes us from a leaf to a twig, a twig to a branch or a branch to a trunk. now repeat that action to get to the Seattle LTG which is a major branch that you will frequently access
Logon
L T G
Before you floats a perfect representation of the city of Seattle. It sits
upon a huge floating stone, suspended above an endless void. The level of
detail is amazing; data streams zoom along the streets below, weaving in and
out of buildings. The Seattle LTG provides links to every number within
Seattle, and you can clearly see where the huge masses of data stream out of
the Renraku Arcology and the Mitsuhama Towers, amongst others.
The voice continues, "and one more time to get to the UCAS RTG which is the big trunk of the UCAS matrix"
Logon
L T G
You fly over what seems to be a massive roadmap of the UCAS. It's a
three-dimensional version of the maps found in street directories, with major
cities and towns rising out of the otherwise flat plains. Detached from the
rest of the UCAS and floating high above the landscape is the Seattle
Metroplex.
"this is the UCAS RTG each RTG is connected to several LTGS and to all the RTGS in the world. Today we will attempt to locate the Tir Tairngire RTG, and follow trunk up through the Portland LTG to the leaf that is Annabell's Antiques. Now..."
Locate Host Tir Tairngire
The calm clipped voice speaks "We just attempted to locate a host that matches the description Tir Tairngire. Any attempt to locate a host that uses a keyword less than three letters long will find soo many matches as to be useless. If your search was successful you will get a small number of results in this case one. That one result was N A dash T T which will look like..."
NA-TT
"now the result of a locate host search is known as an address. you can logon to an address just like we logged onto LTGs before. Logon to the Tir Tairngire RTG address now"
logon NA-TT
The sky of stars surrounds you, and a vast forest spans out in every direction below you. With a wave of your hand, you can see that the stars respond to your motions, with a vague twinkling. Storm clouds roll over parts of the sky, indicative of the high security of this RTG.
"now we are in the Tir Tairngire RTG. from here we want to locate the portland LTG so now enter the command locate host portland and then logon to whatever results appear"
locate host P O R T L A N D
Logon 820-0503-0000
Surrounding you is a goliath, yet idealized and golden version of the Portland skyline. Great bridges carry data over a river that carries much data itself. Great towers, representative of the hosts inside, match their physical skyline counterparts, especially the Telestrian Habitat and the TTB Tower. A sea of stars fills the sky overhead, with storm clouds that fly over at high speed, flashing lightning forebodingly.
"from the Portland LTG that we are now in locate annabel's and logon to her host"
Locate host annabel
logon 0503-1224
A high, tinkling windchime sounds as you enter this Matrix host. It looks like a small, dimly-lit antique shop, and is crammed floor-to-ceiling with
trinkets, accessories, antiques and curiosities. A glass counter against the
south wall holds both an old iron cash register and a thick, tattered ledger
on it; mismatched wooden shelves along the east and west walls groan under the weight of folio volumes, old typewriters and other such bulky items. Racks and display cases clutter the center of the store.
"we are now in Annabel's Antiquities, here we can talk to a sales clerk, or examine merchandise, use our navigation lessons to attempt to find secret hosts within annabel's antiquities or analyze annabel's security. First attempt to talk to a sales clerk by simply saying anything. you will probably notice that this host of Annabel's is not very well staffed as no one responds. next lets do a quick analysis of annabel's security."
analyze security
"if you have had difficulty during this tutorial you may get a result back like this"
Blue-7 Tally: 15 Alert: Active
"this result tells us several things first the blue color shows us that this is a blue security level host. second our tally is at 15 and the system is on active alert. Blue is the lowest security level of host so as long as we stay here we are in no danger. Tally is a count of how much security has noticed your activities in the matrix. anytime you enter a command in the matrix there is a chance of your tally rising. and finally alert level is a rough description of what measures intrusion countermeasures electronics are now taking to prevent you from harming their system. Active Alert is the highest level of measure a system can take before you are disconnected from the matrix. Since we are in a blue host this doesn't really mean much.
once you are done looking around annabel's return to the library main lobby. remember once you get to the tir tairngire rtg you will need to locate hosts and logon to the resulting addresses to get back up the branches. if you get lost simply logoff and then reconnect"

A set of reading rooms to one side allow you more privacy, and a marble
staircase winds off into infinity, a chiseled marble block reading forum at
it's base.
"now that we are back in the seattle library we will learn about reading the metaphor of the host. Everything you see in a matrix host is an icon. Icons can represent people, places, or things in the host. Each Icon will have an appearance that is meant to make you think of what it does but in a theme set by the host sculptor to make everything look appropriate to the scene he means to make. the theme of the seattle library is of a physical library. The theme of a host is also called the metaphor of a host. looking at the scene of the library can you spot icons that represent people? how about the filing system? and finally do you notice the two sets of rooms? one set of rooms represents the host for the reading rooms while the other at the top of the stairs is host for the forum that we started in. now knowing that one represents the reading rooms and the other the forum lets attempt to locate the addresses of those hosts."
locate host reading
locate host forum
"The sculptor of the seattle library wasn't very creative you will see this time the address and the term we tried to search for were the same. this will not always be the case. But nearly always you will notice any icons in a host that represent the other hosts you can connect to. though in the case of an ltg there may be too many to count. Now logon to the forum to finish our tour"

"in this tutorial we have:
connected to the matrix
learned basic navigation
Located hosts
contacted hosts in distant lands
and done some Basic matrix commands
Now is time to safely logoff, do not simply yank the data-jack cable from your head or neck. instead enter the logoff command"
LOGOFF
"now that you are out of the matrix we will discuss a few more theoretical issues. if your deck is equipped with a keyboard or you are still connected via data-jack to your deck you may uninstall utilities, and files you downloaded by the uninstall command, hosts have multiple attributes to describe them, we already mentioned color which roughly describes how secure a host is. along with color is a number the higher the number the more secure a host is, you may recall annabel's was a blue 7 host. the colors of host are blue, green, orange, red, and ultraviolet sometimes known as black. higher color hosts will often have a higher security number and nearly always more rigorous, vigilant, and dangerous intrusion countermeasures electronics. hosts are also describe by their ACIFS ratings ACIFS stands for access control index files slave. each of those words represents one of the 5 basic features of how a host operates. the higher those numbers are the more difficult it is to perform a task involving those systems.
